“Who Won The Election 2024?”In the hard-fought 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has managed to retain power at the center, securing around 290 seats in the 542-member Lok Sabha. However, in a surprising turn of events, the opposition Indian National Democratic Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) bloc has put up a stronger than expected challenge, leading in an impressive 236 seats.
While the NDA crossing the majority mark of 272 seats ensures continuity, with Narendra Modi set to return as Prime Minister for an unprecedented third consecutive term, the INDIA bloc’s robust performance has upended predictions of an overwhelming BJP victory.
“The people of India have spoken, and their voice resonates through these results,” said Rahul Gandhi, the face of the INDIA alliance. “While the NDA has retained power, the opposition has emerged as a formidable force, reflecting the aspirations of millions of Indians for change and inclusive governance.”
The final tally defies exit poll predictions that had forecast a landslide win for the BJP, with some even projecting over 400 seats for the ruling NDA alliance. Instead, the elections have resulted in a closely contested outcome, with the opposition emerging as a formidable force to reckon with.
“We have won the trust of the people to serve the nation, but we acknowledge and respect the strong mandate given to the opposition. We will continue on the path of inclusive development for all.”

Rahul Gandhi, the face of the INDIA bloc, hailed the results as a victory for democracy and pluralism. “While we respect the mandate, the people have also entrusted us with the crucial role of being a responsible and vigilant opposition. We will ensure that the aspirations of all Indians are met,” he stated.
With neither alliance securing a resounding majority, the role of regional parties like the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and the Janata Dal (United) (JD(U)) could be crucial in the days ahead as potential kingmakers.
As India enters a new phase of coalition politics, the dynamics between the ruling BJP-led alliance and the reinvigorated opposition INDIA bloc are set to shape the nation’s socio-political landscape in the coming years.
The Battleground of Uttar Pradesh
One of the most remarkable outcomes has been witnessed in the politically crucial state of Uttar Pradesh (UP), where the INDIA bloc has made significant inroads. The Samajwadi Party (SP) has emerged as the single largest party in the state, leading in 35 seats, while the Congress party is ahead in seven constituencies. The BJP, which had dominated UP in previous elections, has been reduced to 34 seats, a significant decline from its past performance.
“The people of Uttar Pradesh have spoken, and their message is clear – they want a government that prioritizes their welfare and development,” said Akhilesh Yadav, the leader of the SP. “This is a mandate for change, and we are committed to working for the betterment of all sections of society.”
Gains and Losses Across States
The INDIA bloc has also made substantial gains in other states, such as Rajasthan, where the Congress party is leading in eight seats, and its allies have secured additional seats, although the BJP remains strong with 14 seats. In Bihar, the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Congress, and CPI(ML) have made inroads, reducing the BJP’s dominance in the state.
Haryana witnessed a split performance, with both the Congress and the BJP leading in five seats each, indicating a closely contested battle. In Jharkhand, the Congress and the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) are making gains, collectively leading in five seats.
However, the NDA has maintained its stronghold in states like Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Delhi, and Chhattisgarh, where the BJP is leading in all or most seats.
A Strengthened Opposition
While the BJP-led NDA has secured a third consecutive term, the emergence of the INDIA bloc as a formidable opposition force cannot be overlooked. Political analysts suggest that the opposition’s strong performance could lead to a more balanced and accountable government, with checks and balances in place.
“The INDIA bloc has proven its mettle, and its presence in the Lok Sabha will ensure that the government is held accountable for its actions,” said Sanjay Kumar, a prominent political analyst. “This could lead to a more inclusive and representative form of governance, addressing the concerns of diverse sections of the society.”
